Welcome to Jacket’s Required, hello, I’m Dominic Lacquaniti, designer and tailor.
This week’s episode of Jackets required TV is about Body Types and how to best dress for each.
First up is the Average body type – shoulders wider than the waist with a slight visible tapering toward the waist. You want to choose clothing that accentuates that slight taper to make you appear fit. Keep your jackets and trousers tapered to achieve this. This general rule applies for those of you who are super fit and have an inverted triangle upper body shape.
When you are more muscular, achieving a tapered fit in your shirts and jackets will require tailoring, no way around it if you want it to fit your arms, neck, chest and stomach without looking like you are wearing a balloon.
Have a very straight upper body? You’re likely skinny or have a slim build. Your waist and shoulders are the same width apart and slightly different than the average build. You want to ADD definition to your appearance. You can do this with layering, a nice tailored jacket and a skinnier pant. Again, off the rack will prove challenging for you in regard to appearance so see your tailor.
For those of you who may have a mid-section to contend with, as many people do, you’re a triangle body shape. Your shoulders are narrower than your midsection and that means you need to add structure up top for balance. It also means polos, narrow necklines and horizontal stripes are not going to compliment you. We suggest a straight leg trouser to visually balance your look. A single breasted, single button jacket will be your friend as well when it comes to suiting up. Double breasted adds to your midsection and further emphasizes the imbalance so avoid that.
Share with your stylish, and style-challenged friends, and be sure to let me know if you have a specific question or topic you’d like to see in the series.
Thanks for watching. See you next week. Remember, looking good is between you and your tailor…
