Jackets Required TV Presents: Episode 47 Part 1 – Alterations – Basic Hem, is not so basic

Welcome to Jacket’s Required, hello, I’m Dominic Lacquaniti, designer and tailor.
This week’s episode of Jackets required is part one in a 3 part series addressing alterations.
Up first is the most common alteration – the hem.
While this is a ‘common’ alteration, it isn’t always ‘simple’. There are a few key factors that come into play when we look at altering a hem.
First of course are the measurements. Here’s a tip that you always need to follow – bring or wear the shoes that you are going to wear with the pants or skirt or dress that you are having hemmed.
Particularly with regard to pants, If you want them to look perfect on, then you need to address the pants break – where it falls on the shoe. In order to do this, you need to be measured with the shoes on.
Next – What is the fabric? Is it a delicate sheer fabric or a stretch or knit?
Nothing simple about those types of fabrics when it comes to sewing.
These types of fabrics pucker and can get pulls or runs in the fabric, essentially ruining it.
You want to be sure that you are working with someone who will care for your clothing so having an alteration as simple as a hem, say at a chain dry cleaning store, can be a risky proposition. This is definitely a situation where you get what you pay for.
If you like the garment enough to have it altered so that it can stay an active part of your wardrobe, invest in the alterations to extend the life of your clothing.
Last point I’ll touch on today is –
How intricate is the stitching?
Some stitches, some hems, are rather simple and once properly measured and marked, can be completed by using a machine.
Others however, especially on quality garments, can involve intricate stitching that requires it to be removed delicately by hand and then re-sewn by hand as well.
Our qualified expert staff can advise you on the best way to address the hemming need and will always choose to preserve the quality and integrity of the garment you bring in for alterations.
At Rocco’s we take the time to evaluate the garment and your desire to transform it, and we will advise you if it’s something relatively easy or if it’s going to be more time consuming to do it properly. We take no short cuts.
Either way, we come back to the fit being the true measure of success when it comes to an alteration like hemming. We will work with you to ensure you are pleased with the result every time.
