Welcome to Jacket’s Required, hello, I’m Dominic Lacquaniti, designer and tailor.
This week’s episode of Jackets required
Is part 2 in this 3 part series focused on alterations.
A very common request is to refit someone’s pants, say after weight loss. This requires the trifecta of alterations and is not a simple task.
In order to alter trousers, either to be a bit roomier or a bit smaller, requires alterations to the waist,
and the crotch of the garment.
First we have you try on the garment for measurements.
Then we must open the whole waistband.
Next we re-create the pattern of the pants.
We then, in essence, filet the trousers open.
At this step we need to re-grade the pants.
If you alter just 1 or 2 of these 3 things when trying to cinch in or let out pants you will see the side effects in the other un-touched areas.
If you don’t address these 3 key areas then your pants can have a saggy bottom, or a dip in the waistband in the back, or even worse yet they could ride up and give you the infamous moose knuckle or camel toe – YIKES! Why would anyone alter pants to look like that on purpose?!
Short cuts will get you further from your alterations goal and can likely ruin your garment. Don’t do it!
Come in to see the skilled staff at Rocco’s next time you need an alteration and we will treat you, and your pants, with care. We do multiple fittings and alterations in order to get the perfect altered fit while preserving your garment. Invest the time and the money to have it done right, enough said.
